Knowing just how important healthy breathing has been over the last year, we’ve produced a Supplement Supporting Healthy Lungs called VitaPost Lung Support.

It’s a new supplement that incorporates the ever-popular vitamins C and K2, along with carefully selected botanicals in support of healthy lungs and the respiratory system.

Inhale, Exhale… How does the respiratory system work?

Many cultures view breath as our lifeforce. Not many people are aware of how the respiratory system works and how to support it with nutrition. Every cell in your body needs oxygen. When you inhale, air enters your lungs, and oxygen from the air moves to your blood. When you exhale, waste gas (mostly CO2) moves from your blood to the lungs to be breathed out. Inhaling and exhaling cause the lungs to expand and constrict repeatedly, like an elastic balloon that is being blown up then let out.

The muscles and bones support the lungs. The diaphragm is the strong wall of muscle that separates your chest cavity from your abdominal cavity. When inhaling (‘inspiration’) the diaphragm contracts and the chest cavity enlarges, creating a vacuum that pulls air into the lungs. When exhaling (‘expiration’) the diaphragm relaxes and forces air out of the lungs.

With age and lifestyle choices, lung function begins to change. This is due to several factors. Muscles weaken with age including the diaphragm. Elasticity is naturally lost in the lung tissue. The rib cage may tighten, leaving less room for the lungs to expand. While some reduction in lung capacity is normal with age, you can support your lungs by avoiding exposure to pollutants, exercising, supporting your immune system, and ensuring you have a well-balanced diet.

Lung Support Key Ingredients

The respiratory system requires a diverse range of nutrients, just like other complex systems in the body. Even though lungs give us oxygen, they can benefit a lot from antioxidant support. Even the right mix of energy sources can ease breathing. Below are some key ingredients in our formula.

Vitamin C

One study found promising results for using vitamin C to support lung function. The study concluded that overall a diet rich in vitamin C is likely to be beneficial for lung health. Vitamin C also supports many aspects of the immune system in integral ways. VitaPost Lung Support contains 125mg of vitamin C, meaning the formula is a high-potency source of this essential vitamin.

Cordyceps

The strange and wonderful Cordyceps mushroom used in Traditional Chinese practices for centuries to provide a number of benefits. Perhaps one of the reasons why these fungi remain in use for so long has to do with their soothing properties. In some studies, Cordyceps offers calming support for airways, and shown support for healthy lung hydration.

Menaquinone

Vitamin K2 (menaquinone) is quickly becoming a hero of modern supplement formulations. Vitamin K2 supports the proper distribution of calcium within the body. Lung tissue is elastic due to the collagen and elastin fibres meshed within the lung parenchyma. Just like an elastic balloon, a lung with good elasticity ebbs and flows with ease when inhaling and exhaling. A special protein called Matrix Gla Protein (MGP) is dependent on nutritional Vitamin K2, and MGP plays a strong role in the maintenance of elastin fibres in the lungs.
